YouSendIt: Over 13 Million Served

YouSendIt is far from a new service and with over 13-million users I was surprised to find out that not that many people I work with on a daily basis either knew about it or even used it. In summary, YouSendIt solves any issues you may have with emailing large file attachments.

There used to be a time when sending large files or data was a chore. You would have to schedule a courier to pickup a CD, try and setup a makeshift FTP site or spend endless hours with your IT department to find quick solutions–all of which are costly and not necessarily reliable. Heck- how do you know if someone downloaded the file from your FTP site, or if more than just the person intended nabbed a copy without you knowing?

Consider these issues solved with YouSendIt. The free basic account lets you send attachments of up to 100MB. Setting yourself up is, well, painless. Either use the built in web form or you can download a YouSendIt uploader which doesn’t tie up your web browser. Other tools are made available including integration with Microsoft Outlook and more. When you send a file for the first time you also have some pay-per-use service options including: Premium Delivery (up your limit to 2GB), password protecting your file, verify recipient identity (YouSendIt ensures the recipient is the one receiving your file) and Return Receipt (get a confirmation when your file is downloaded).

Paying Members Get all the Perks

Of course as a YouSendIt Subscriber and business user you benefit from not only the pay-per-use services, but other great tools and resources as well. Where to begin. Your file size limit is 2GB, you get a personalized inbox/outbox/web interface allowing you to track all of your sent and received files and online storage to keep you on top of your activity. On the corporate side the possibilities are endless, with services ranging from customized site branding to true Outlook-Integration–imagine changing the action of the attachment icon so that all attachments automatically get sent via YouSendIt ensuring proper IT management, tracking and security.

Plug It In!

I mentioned the Outlook plugin earlier on in the review but YouSendIt goes way beyond that. Their YouSendIt Express application increases your upload speed by 25%, automatically zips up and sends folders (yes, you can drag a full folder directly into it and YouSendIt packages it up for you) and works on both PC and Mac.

Creative professionals should really pay attention to this one: YouSendIt also has plugins for Final Cut Pro, Aperture, iPhoto, Photoshop (PC/Mac), CorelDraw X3 and PaperPort. So, directly from your favorite creative application, you can tap into YouSendIt!

Lite or free users can upload up to 100MB per file. All of the plug-ins (Outlook, Aperture, Final Cut, so on) are free for any user. Express is also free to download for any user.

Another great feature that you get when you are a paid subscriber is the YouSendIt Dropbox. As a paid user you can send your unique YouSendIt Dropbox URL to anyone. They can then upload any file to your personal YouSendIt Dropbox, which gets directly sent to you. You do not have to be a user of YouSendIt to send a file through someone’s YouSendIt Dropbox. This makes it easy for you and anyone that is sending you files.
