Kinect SDK Opens Up to Windows Developers

Microsoft is ready to open the flood gates with their upcoming release of the SDK for Kinect for Windows. According to Microsoft “It will be available this spring as a free download, and will give academic researchers and enthusiasts access to key pieces of the Kinect system-such as the audio technology, system applications programming interfaces and direct control of the Kinect sensor itself.” What does that mean to the average PC user? Well, if the functionality currently used on the Xbox 360 can also be implemented at the desktop level, how do gesture and voice commands grab you? As far as security goes, the Kinect cameras can also use face recognition to automatically log you in to your PC; the possibilities are endless–and considering the number of Kinect mods that have already been made by users, imagine what could be possible with Microsoft’s support…
