Android App of the Week: Native Google Docs

This is a big step forward.

I REALLY miss having great document apps on my phone. I used to use Softmaker’s office suite on Windows Mobile (it really was fantastic, and rumors say a BETA will be available for Android soon, rumors started by me, because I talked to Softmaker, and they said a BETA might be available soon, and that I could review it once it was available, so there, HA!), and lately between team members on production projects, we’ve all adopted Google Docs.

Our biggest complaint using it however, was having to open a browser to look at the docs while on the go…

Well.

No more.

Now we have a native app.

The look of the app is very simple, and clean. Just like any of Google’s other native apps (like Reader or Listen). The app does a great job of organizing your different docs and spreadsheets.

While viewing is simple and straightforward, I wish we had more functionality while editing. Those looking for more tools than the browser based version will be disappointed. In that regard, they’re pretty much equal.

It’s funny.

By making this app, it’s somehow MUCH more usable than just having a bookmark in a browser. The fact that I can get into my docs by pushing one icon, instead of pushing a browser icon, hitting a menu, opening my list of bookmarks, and THEN getting into my docs, is refreshing.

Lastly, the app handles switching accounts MUCH better than a browser does. If you manage multiple GMail accounts on your phone, it’s MUCH faster to toggle between those accounts through the Docs app than through the browser.

So until we get a true, fully featured, desktop competitive office suite, I’ll be chillin with the Google Docs app.

And so should you.
