Vimeo Announces Five New Mobile Apps

Sharing video online is becoming more and more of a standard practice given the popularity of camera-enabled smartphones. From the latest 1080p capabilities in the iPhone 4S to 720p video of phones from just a year ago, people are sharing amateur video and/or professional quality productions every second – and doing so is getting a whole lot easier courtesy of Vimeo. Vimeo is not your standard video-sharing site, it is a community of people sharing incredible content from all walks of life. Their featured channels allow you to sift through awesome productions that people around the world are producing. Whether you want to embed a video into your website, or just share a personal moment with friends or family – Vimeo makes it extremely easy to both use and view – and now its even easier with the launch of five new mobile apps.

Today Vimeo is officially launching its Mobile Apps for Android smartphones, Windows Phone 7 smartphones, Android Tablets and the Kindle Fire. Plus, a version 2.0 of their existing mobile app for iOS devices is slated for the end of the month with incredible enhancements. In order to understand the result, its important to understand the reason – here is a clip from our interview with Vimeo’s Joe Schmitt: Listen Now

The New Android & Windows Phone 7 Apps

Embracing the ever-increasing popularity of mobile devices – these new apps bring the full Vimeo experience to users. Users can now browse featured content without the need to login. Those who do want to login, can participate in the community by commenting, sharing videos, flag videos to watch later, follow video stats, comments, manage comments on their videos, check stats and even more. Uploading gets easier with the ability to record and update directly from your devices – the queue manager checks your connection and if for some reason your upload is interrupted it will continue when signal returns – Its a complete tool to empower users who are shooting and browsing videos.

Windows Phone 7 users get a completely Metro UI designed interface that is not just a port from Android. Vimeo worked closely with Microsoft to develop an interface that is very WP7 related and works closely with other apps as well. You can share to other services and browse Vimeo just as you would expect to experience from a Windows Phone 7 Metro UI App.

The New Tablet Vimeo App

Vimeo didn’t just port their smartphone app to the larger screen of tablets – they thought about the larger real-estate, listened to feedback from users and created an interface designed for complete video immersion (via the Full-Screen view) or for those multitasking individuals who want to watch something but still browse other channels, or comment and/or browse the Vimeo experience. The new UI takes advantage of the expanded room to truly be involved with the community. For the Kindle Fire, the app was also customized to be used on a 7″ one-handed device. Even though it doesn’t have a camera, it gives users the Vimeo experience in hand.

The iOS App – Coming End of Month

The iOS app is a true version upgrade. The iPhone and iPod version get complete UI updates to bring the complete experience to the users. The interface gets a dashboard-style video and the whole UI is designed specifically for iOS. This is not just a port from Android. The video editor gets even more useful with access to the Music Store – integrating licensed or license-free music is as simple as downloading it and integrating it into your production. The editor is still iOS only due to the capabilities of Apple Devices, although Vimeo continues to investigate ways to bring that high-demand feature to other platforms.

The Android and Windows Phone 7 versions of the app are available now in their respective marketplaces, while the iOS versions will be released later this month. Here’s the official PR:
