Microsoft Announces New Surface Tablet (UPDATE)

Microsoft’s mysterious press conference is a mystery no more, as the folks from Redmond have just announced their latest piece of hardware–the Windows 8-based Surface Tablet.

Sporting a 10.6″ display, the Surface features super model svelteness, measuring in at 9.3mm thin and weighing less than 1.5 lbs. It also features an industry-first Magnesium case, in addition to clever touches such as an integrated stand and optically bonded Gorilla Glass display. As for ports, we know the Surface has USB 2.0 onboard, as well as HDMI and front and rear cameras– it also has a cover that includes a built-in keyboard. We’ll have more as the story progresses…so stay tuned!

(UPDATE) As it turns out, there are currently 2 versions of Surface Tablets; 1 sporting Windows RT (with an interface closer to Windows Phone), and the other calling itself a “Windows 8 Pro” tablet. And while we understand that the Pro model is clearly geared more toward the power user looking for a more “desktop-like” experience, we can’t help but wonder if this strategy will really work to Microsoft’s advantage, considering how it could potentially lead to customer confusion and fragmentation (I’m pretty sure the average consumer has no clue whatsoever as to what Windows RT even is).
