Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light Coming To Google Chrome

Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light was a surprise hit when it came out on consoles and PCs in 2010. The isometric departure from the series’ usual gameplay, along with excellent puzzles and a co-operative mode, was a welcome boost for the series. Now, Square Enix is releasing it as a browser based title for Google Chrome. Recoded and developed for Native Client, Square Enix announced the new version of the Crystal Dynamics game at the Google I/O developer conference. While there’s no set release date for Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light at this point, you can check out the full press release after the jump.

SAN FRANCISCO (June 28, 2012) — Square Enix today announced at the Google I/O developer conference that they are expanding their browser gaming collaboration and the internally developed Crystal Dynamics game, LARA CROFT AND THE GUARDIAN OF LIGHT™, will be coming to Google Chrome this fall. The first Square Enix title for the Chrome Web Store, Mini Ninjas™, launched free-to-play in March 2012.

The critically acclaimed LARA CROFT AND THE GUARDIAN OF LIGHT originally launched in 2010 via digital download for consoles and PC, and has been developed for the web with Native Client, an open-source technology for running native compiled code in the browser.

“We’re happy to be working closely with Google to bring Lara Croft™ to the Google Chrome without download or installation of game software for the first time,” said Phil Rogers, president and chief executive office, Square Enix Europe. “Console quality gaming in the browser is an area we believe in and are committed to by delivering innovative, high quality entertainment experiences.”

Additional titles from Square Enix’s group-wide lineup are planned to be made available in the browser within the next year.

LARA CROFT AND THE GUARDIAN OF LIGHT tells the story of Lara Croft and Totec, a 2,000 year old Mayan Warrior, who work together to stop the evil spirit Xolotl and retrieve the Mirror of Smoke. Media and developers attending today’s Google I/O conference are able to play a demo of LARA CROFT AND THE GUARDIAN OF LIGHT for Chrome.
