Android App of the Week – Dwolla

So last week I talked about a great way to manage point of sale credit card transactions using Square.

But what if you want to pay (or receive payments) without using a credit card?

What if you think credit card fees are too high?

If only there was a way to link bank account information while on the go… +Continue Reading

CES Android App of the Week: Square

Expanding our abilities with smartphone and tablet hardware was a common theme at many booths this year at CES.

As this show is about the tech INDUSTRY however, this week I’m not going to be covering a game or entertainment app. I had the pleasure of speaking with representatives of Square, an app that transforms any Android or iOS device into a mobile Point of Sale system for credit card transactions. This is maybe one of the most compelling business uses I’ve seen yet for mobile “entertainment” devices. I’ve encountered several businesses trying to employ the iPad as a POS for sales floor reps, but it’s often a hamstrung setup, usually involving the sales rep simply navigating to that company’s website on the iPad to complete the order. This is a task better served by traditional POS solutions. +Continue Reading

Android App of the Week: DSLR Controller

This may be the most useful app I’ve ever used.

Tablets are starting to become more popular, but at their heart, they’re slabs of screen for consuming media. It can take a surprising amount of effort to use one for media creation.

By the same token, us wannabe photogs are using our cameras for more and more. I actually use my Canon SLR more to shoot video these days than I do for photography. One of the biggest issues I have with video on an SLR is using the tiny screen when out in the field. I could use my laptop, but that’s a bit bulky, and the battery life isn’t great on my old Lappy.

If only there was a way for me to connect my SLR to my tablet… +Continue Reading

Android App of the Week: My Fave Apps of 2011

2011 was a milestone year for me.

It marked the first year where I used a (number of) Android phone(s) exclusively as my daily driver. I’ve of course played with iOS, Symbian, webOS, and WinPhone7, but when it came to getting work done, Android was the OS I turned to.

Hit the jump for a list of my favorite Android apps of the last year! +Continue Reading

Android App of the Week: NORAD Santa Tracker

It’s that time of year!

Time for children the world over to pester their parents about the arrival of  a certain jolly holiday elf.

What’s the tech savvy Christmas participant to do?

Get a little help from NORAD of course… +Continue Reading

Android App of the Week – GPS Test

Sometimes it’s a little utility app that can make all the difference.

See, I just spent three days out in the middle of the California Desert on a film shoot, and our location was basically a random spot that someone liked (with a nice view of the mountains.

We were about two miles from any cell service (let alone any reliable data), and there weren’t any landmarks to speak of for guidance.

How was I able to mark our spot, and direct people to the shoot?

Let me tell you about GPS Test…  +Continue Reading

Android App of the Week: Google Music

The dream.

To have all your music accessible to any device that can play it, and to easily add new music to that library wherever you are.
We’ve been kept from this audio utopia for far too long.

The visceral reaction to services like Napster had a chilling effect on media tech, and pretty much ensured that all new development was pushed into a near criminal gray area. Basically you have to be a company bigger than any individual record label just to have a conversation about media distribution.

Google just so happens to be a pretty big company… +Continue Reading

Android App of the Week: Wind Up Knight

So the big news this week was Google Music finally leaving BETA, and we will be taking a LONG look at that service in the coming weeks, but truthfully a free arcade game has been occupying all my time of late–so this week’s app review is going to focus on that!

See, I’m an old school gamer at heart. I’m of the very first generation of people that has never known a world without some kind of video game in it, and while I LOVES me some 3D action, there will always be a soft spot in my heart for a good side-scrolling platformer.

Say hello to Wind Up Knight! +Continue Reading

Android App of the Week: Wifi File Explorer

Sure.

We’re supposed to be living our lives up in the cloud, but there’s a reason why all of our communication gadgets now come with GIGABYTES of storage.

We’re supposed to put files, documents, music, movies, pictures and more on these handy little computing devices.

Until recently though, we’ve lacked a handy way to transfer information between devices. Usually we need to employ a full computer and a cable to move over anything bigger than an emailed attachment.

Enter Wifi File Explorer! +Continue Reading

Android App of the Week: SHADOWGUN

I’ve reviewed a lot of “time wasters” in the past for my app of the week articles, and I’m sorry to say I’ve sort of neglected you hardcore gamers out there.

This changes today.

Android is finally hitting the gaming big time, and in a big way. We have had amazingly powerful hardware on Android for a while now, but we’re only just now getting games that fully take advantage of it, and can deliver a near-console-like experience.

Yes folks, if you hadn’t guessed already, this week we talk SHADOWGUN… +Continue Reading

Android App of the Week: OfficeSuite Pro 5

Time again to talk a little business.

Sometimes you need more robust document support than Google Docs can offer.

And right now I’m still waiting for SoftMaker to get their office apps out of beta.

What is one supposed to do in the meantime?

Check out OfficeSuite Pro 5 of course! +Continue Reading

Android App of The Week: Blackmoon AttachSave

This is a simple one.

How much of a bummer is it that not all file attachments can be downloaded from the GMail app? It’s a MAJOR bummer.

Really? We can preview, but we can’t save? Really? Windows Mobile would let me save attachments…

Blackmoon AttachSave is a simple plugin app that allows you to save attachments in your email to your SD card.

Anywho, check it out if you get sent files on a regular basis; it’s cleared up many headaches for me.

Blackmoon AttachSave for Android 2.3.4 and below.
