Catch Some Rays & a Movie with Active-I

Ever dream of being a spy? I used to watch James Bond movies and marvel at the gadgets Q would invent and wonder what kind of technology would exist in the future for international men (and women) of mystery. While 007 never laid his hands or his eyes on the Active-I Sunglasses, there’s little doubt he could put them to good use.

Interactive Group has managed to squeeze a video and audio recording and playing device into a set of polarized sunglasses; and unlike some rudimentary wearable monitors we’ve seen in years gone by, these things actually look pretty cool.

Hot New iAccessories from 4i Concepts

Alright, so you’ve got your shiny new iPhone 4 and can’t wait to show it to the world and make use of Verizon’s new 4G network…but how do you keep it safe? New York’s 4i Concepts introduced three new products at CES that not only protect your favourite new toy but that make it easier to use as well.

There’s nothing new about an overlay film to protect your smartphone’s screen from scratches; but the 4iThumbs takes the idea one step further by placing a series of ridges on the film, giving users a more tactile typing experience on their virtual QWERTY keypads. And if the ridges on the 4iThumbs aren’t always ideal for your device usage, don’t worry–the film can be removed and stored on the back of your iPhone when not in use.

A New Realm for Magic: The Gathering January 18th!

Magic: The Gathering – Tactics debuts free online Jan. 18

Move over World of Warcraft; the folks at Sony Online Entertainment are set to tap into a much more established fantasy role playing title and the best news for users is that it will be free to play!

Magic: The Gathering – Tactics is set to launch January 18th, giving players around the world a new spin on a classic favorite. Tactics adds to its stables of creatures, characters and magic spells in a fully rendered 3D environment, with the ability to connect with other online players for intense battles.

Magic trading cards have been around for years, and for many, have become highly valued collectibles; but up to this point, your shoebox full of Magic cards and the spells and powers you’ve accumulated have been confined to your local play groups. Now, you can expand that into the online universe–and thanks to the free-to-play format, it won’t cost you a cent to get started.

iBuyPower Debuts Chimera Gaming Rig at CES

iBuyPower indeed…

So the specs on this thing are of course a beast, but I really want to talk about the case. I’m so glad to see more specialty manufacturers providing excellent airflow. The better your cooling, the longer lived your components will be.

The Chimera case features SEVEN fans, all 120mm or larger (including one monster 200mm). Just sick. I wish more traditional manufacturers (like HP and Dell) would start working these kinds of options into their workstations…

Cooling aside, you’ve got a rig capable of supporting 24GB of RAM, multiple drives in RAID, and triple SLI/Crossover.

iBuyPower’s prices always start off reasonable; a base model Chimera can be yours for $1099, but I’m sure that price climbs quick when you start filling that case…

Full Press Release after the jump!

Speakal Introduces 2011 Line of iPhone/iPod Docks

SBPKX-100, Kurve, SB12 & SB5

The 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has been tremendously busy for Speakal. The audio accessory and technology firm has been unveiling new products left, right and center this week–and the latest introduction centers on the 2011 line of iPhone and iPod docking sound systems.

The SBPKX-100 is available in a variety of colors and features high quality audio, thanks to an acoustic accelerator and digital signal processing. There’s an AM/FM tuner with 20 presets, an alarm clock which automatically syncs with your iPhone or iPod and it runs just as well on AA batteries as it does being plugged into the wall.

Smaller and more…um…round, is the SB12 which has a universal iDevice dock, backed by a colorful ring, surrounding a thin speaker.

NVIDIA to Create Web Community for 3D Content

Many electronics consumers, even those who like being on the cutting edge, are still waiting to invest in 3D display technology for their computer and television needs–and the reason is simple: for many, there still isn’t enough 3D content to justify the extra expense. Enter graphics giant NVIDIA, who is announcing a new type of social network designed specifically to share 3D content.

3DVisionLive.com will allow users to browse a catalogue of 3D movies, music videos, sporting events, 3D photos and games; you’ll be able to create and manage your own galleries of user-generated content, as well as share files–providing they don’t violate any digital rights management regulations.

The interface promises to be powerful and easy to use, thanks to photo and video management engines provided by Phereo and Fordela. Find more information at www.3dVisionLive.com

News Corp to Test Digital Newsprint Market with iPad Daily News

The digital Daily News debuts on January 19th

The debate rages on about the future of print media. Will traditional newspapers and magazines survive much beyond this decade? Are the very expensive marketing dollars required to advertise in print worthwhile? In an ever greener society, does it still make sense to continue an industry which, while vastly more efficient and environmentally friendly than years gone by, still has an inherently non-green side to its personality?

The answers are maybe, probably not and no. And while that may sound grim on first blush, there is still a bright potential future for the written word–albeit delivered in a different manner.

With that, News Corp is finally making good on its promise to make exclusive content available for iPad users. The Daily will make its electronic debut on January 19th giving subscribers instant delivery (and real time updates) of breaking news, and advertisers the ability to program selective marketing into the digital pages. The idea is hardly new, however, and many online subscription-based newspaper models have come and gone with little fanfare; the reason being there are simply too many news agencies delivering news for free on the web, and until the industry unites as a whole, why would any end user agree to pay for that which he or she can get for free?

Take Control of Your TV and Phone Options: netTALK

We know the day is coming when your television, telephone and computer will merge into one easy to use device. In fact, the technology has existed for some time already allowing that to happen; but we humans are slow to embrace change and the economies of scale dictate that major technological breakthroughs often emerge slowly because of prohibitively high prices.

netTALK.COM Inc. Is taking one small step for technology and one giant leap for convergence with its netTALK TV, described by company officials as an ultra-low-cost digital TV solution to address an over-priced and underwhelming cable TV market.

Elgato Turbo.264 HD Makes Video Editing a Snap

Just days after its official introduction, Apple is already enjoying huge success with its Mac App Store and products like Elgato Turbo.264 HD makes it easy to understand why.

Turbo.264 HD is an easy-to-use video converter which will turn virtually any video format into something you can view and edit on your Mac, iPad, iPhone, iPod or Apple TV. The software allows you to preview your edits before conversion, saving you precious time and processing power. Better still; the App leaves the original video file untouched.

Elgato Turbo.264 HD makes quick work of MKV and AVI files as well as most other standard video formats, and converts them into high-res files that are optimized for viewing on your Apple device in 720p and 1080p brilliance–plus uploading to sites like YouTube is virtually automatic.

Perhaps the most appealing feature of the Turbo.264 App is its price; at $49.99, it is a must have for Apple users who use a camera on a regular basis.

Samsung Rocks the Cradle and the Baby Monitor Industry

Samsung BabyView allows you to sing a lullaby from around the world.

Say goodbye to your antiquated baby monitor that transmits fuzzy sounds of your bundle of joy to a receiver with the same sound quality as a child’s walkie talkie. Samsung is introducing BabyView, which promises parents an added degree of security thanks to its high-res screen, temperature sensor and alarm settings.

What really sets BabyView apart from the competition is its ability to monitor multiple rooms at once, similar to a video surveillance system and then record the video onto an SD card. The advantages of recording little Johnny as he sleeps are obvious; parents can finally solve the mystery of how the blue elephant always ends up under the crib. Perhaps the most appealing aspect is that the images captured on the SD card can then be uploaded to popular social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter or Flickr. We could be in store for a new generation of funny baby videos on the web because, as most parents know, babies tend to be most active (and often most entertaining) right when they wake up in the morning!

Waiting For our Zeppelin Air…

If you’re a fan of the site, (and we hope you are) you already know how much we covet Bowers & Wilkins audio products; featuring top-notch design and unparalleled audio quality, they have yet to disappoint us. Just a few days ago at CES, B&W announced their first product to support Apple’s new AirPlay technology, allowing wireless streaming of your iTunes library to any AirPlay enabled device–and that product is the Zeppelin Air. Based on the extremely popular Zeppelin Speaker Dock, the new Zeppelin Air looks…well, pretty much like the original Zeppelin–but looks can be deceiving. Along with Airplay technology, this new Zepp features improved drivers, upgraded amplifiers, as well as advanced DSP; it would have been easy to just add AirPlay functionality to an already brilliant product–but that’s just not B&W’s style. Bowers & Wilkins will be sending us one of our very own for a full review–my only hope is that I can show a bit more grace than I did while waiting for my P5 Headphones
