CES: Modlet Helps Clean Up Your Energy Use

America could really use a smart energy grid. Power plants and relays that can talk to individual gadgets, help shape our energy use so we don’t all hit the grid at the same time. My podcasting buddy Richard Campbell, host of DotNetRocks, has a fantastic episode explaining all the ins and outs of our current electricity woes (Carl & Richard Geek Out About Electricity) .

Since it’s unlikely we’ll get our awesome, magic, intelligent smart energy grid any time soon, we consumers now have a fantastic resource to turn our homes into smart energy networks… +Continue Reading

CES: First Look at the Canon Powershot G1 X

Canon is stepping up their game on bridge cameras, and the new G1X looks like it’s going to be a monster. Massively stepping up sensor size over a traditional point and shoot, this looks like it could be a great semi-pro photo solution.

CES: First Look at the Lenovo Ideapad S2 10-inch Android Tablet/Laptop

FINALLY!

Another tablet/laptop convertible to give Asus some competition, and if it’s built as solid as the rest of Lenovo’s gear, it could be a great tool for the road warriors.

CES: Juan GEEKS Out at the Pentax Booth

I totally couldn’t help it. I made a complete fool out of myself, and I absolutely LOVED it.
See, I went to the Pentax booth to check out the new Q system of cameras with interchangeable lenses.
Super small form factor, using a traditional P&S sensor, but allowing the user to swap lenses for different shooting scenarios. I was impressed with the build quality, big bright screen, nice solid weight, even a pop-up flash, and it’s already pretty well accessorized with a small handful of lens options and a hotshoe-mounted eyepiece for those of us who still like getting our noses up in a camera. Performance was quick, focusing was accurate, and even on such a small camera there’s something kinda great about switching lenses and having the ability to turn a focus ring to focus manually. +Continue Reading

CES: Crashing the Canon Booth to Check Out the EOS C300

I totally got boxed out trying to get my hands on an EOS 1DX, but I managed to elbow my way into playing with a pair of Canon’s new cinema camera, the EOS C300.

Pics can not do this thing justice. It’s beautiful in it’s ruggedness. Having handled all of Canon’s current range of SLR’s, the layout of the C300 felt strange and familiar at the same time. If you’ve ever held a medium format camera, the C300 feels very similar in the hand, and just as heavy. +Continue Reading

CES: ZAGG HzO Wateproofing Demo and ZAGG Keys Hands On!

I love Zagg. Can I just get that out of the way right now?
In a world full of Gorilla Glass displays, I still cover every slab of glass I own with some kind of screen guard, and it’s usually a Zagg.

I heard they were demo-ing their new “HD” line of screen guards, so I went to check them out. When I got to their booth I got distracted by their HzO tech display and completely forgot to look for the guards.

HzO is a chemical treatment which coats the internals of a device to make them substantially more water resistant. It’s not a consumer applied product, so any use of it has to be installed either by Zagg or the device manufacturer. The display was really fun though, and reminded me of my Motorola Defy torture test. I mean it’s the year 2012, and the one device we rely on the most to make it through the day can be defeated by a glass of water? Come on! +Continue Reading

First Thoughts: Nokia Lumia 900

It’s no secret that we’re a bit excited about Nokia’s new Lumia 900, and equally intrigued by what the new teaming of Microsoft and Nokia holds for the future. Our own Juan Carlos Bagnell was asked by Nokia to share his initial thoughts on the Lumia 900 at CES 2012, and we have the video…

CES Android App of the Week: Square

Expanding our abilities with smartphone and tablet hardware was a common theme at many booths this year at CES.

As this show is about the tech INDUSTRY however, this week I’m not going to be covering a game or entertainment app. I had the pleasure of speaking with representatives of Square, an app that transforms any Android or iOS device into a mobile Point of Sale system for credit card transactions. This is maybe one of the most compelling business uses I’ve seen yet for mobile “entertainment” devices. I’ve encountered several businesses trying to employ the iPad as a POS for sales floor reps, but it’s often a hamstrung setup, usually involving the sales rep simply navigating to that company’s website on the iPad to complete the order. This is a task better served by traditional POS solutions. +Continue Reading

CES: Hands on With The Nokia Lumia 900

This is one of the phones I was most excited to check out at CES.

I had the pleasure of sitting in on a blogger breakfast setup by Nokia, when lo and behold, one of them whipped out a Lumia 900 for us to play with.

Apologies up front for the poor photos, as it was VERY dark in the restaurant… +Continue Reading
