Whether World of Warcraft players will admit it or not, Everquest was the MMO that started it all–and its follow-up, Everquest II, gave players more of what they loved about the original. For players that have the Destiny of Velious expansion, the world world of Everquest II is about to get even bigger thanks to the Skyshrine update. In addition to raising the level cap to 92, Skyshrine features a new outdoor zone, more quests, new raid content, and much more. Those who have the Age of Discovery expansion will also be treated to some new goodies, including new Dungeon Maker adventures, more recipes, and even some new creatures to tame. Master Chief is back–need I say more? Set 4 years after Halo 3, Halo 4 continues the saga of Master Chief and Cortana as they protect the universe from yet another threat–the only downside is having to wait another 7 months to see how it all plays out. For those of you who can’t seem to get enough of the Halo universe, you may want to tune in to Conan tonight (11p.m. Pacific) to catch a special Halo segment, as Conan himself gets in on the launch celebration. This year marks the 100 year anniversary of the Titanic’s fateful maiden voyage–and rather than dwell on the tragedy, the folks at O-Games invite players to experience the Titanic in a much more “mysterious” way with their latest game. Titanic Mystery.
Titanic Mystery puts players aboard the Titanic II, and asks them to solve mysteries in this adventure based title, which includes saving passengers from a bomb hidden aboard the ship. So how can you make your Skyrim wanderings even better? Well if you’ve got an Xbox 360 and Kinect, later this month you’ll be able to summon your dragon powers with your own voice just like the Dovahkin. Voice commands are coming to Skyrim through a title update later this month and not only for your dragon shouts, but for follower commands, all of your menu options, and even for quick saving and loading. It will also add a slew of new hotkey functions designed for use with the voice command system. Bethesda has put a video up on their site showing some of the voice commands, and the title update is scheduled to be released on Xbox 360 later this month. They’ve also said they hope to announce the first of Skyrim’s expansions soon as well.
…at least according to Scott Steinberg, author of The Modern Parent’s Guide to Kids and Video Games. Of course, he is backed by some pretty serious research–including studies done at Duke, Harvard and the Office of Naval Research…and these studies show that gaming is good for far more than just enhancing small motor skills. In fact, gaming has been shown to help kids with problem solving, planning and socialization as well–and these seem to be just a few of gaming’s benefits. PAYDAY: The Heist is bringing a whole slate of new features with its latest title update. The update delivers a new drop-in mode for joining games, a selection of new presidential masks for players who’ve reached level 145, and a new elite difficulty mode called OVERKILL 145+, which unlocks new weapons, events and achievements.

In more gaming news, Nintendo has unveiled more details about the forthcoming Mario Tennis Open for the 3DS. The latest in a long line of Mario Tennis games, Open promises a single player tournament along with online and Wifi singles and doubles matches against other 3DS players. Wifi games can even be played with just one Mario Tennis Open game card–which is good news for multiple-3DS households.

The first expansion pack for the… err… civilization builder, Civilisation V – Gods & Kings, will be released on June 19. Offering 9 new races, each with their own leaders and wonders, along with new units, scenarios, buildings and technology, God & Kings has even more scope for the budding conqueror in us all. Civilisation V: Gods & Kings will be available for Windows systems on its release.

Back in February we told you that some lucky gamer was going to walk away $1 Million richer thanks to 2K Sports’ MLB 2K12 Perfect Game Challenge–and the competition has officially started. You have between now and April 30th to enter, and the top 8 players who throw perfect games will be flown to New York (May 9-10), and participate in a single-elimitation tournament–with the winner walking away with a cool million. Usually when a firmware update is quickly pulled (as the vita’s was yesterday), you don’t see it re-released the very next day–let alone upgraded. Yet this is exactly what happened with the PlayStation Vita’s firmware update, as yesterday’s version 1.65 update is now today’s version 1.66. The good news is, in addition to fixing the bugs in yesterday’s release, today’s firmware update actually includes some additions. Here’s the feature list, courtesy of the folks at The Sixth Axis:
- The [System Music] setting in Settings > [Sound & Display] now affects BGM in PS Store, near and Sign-Up screens as well as the Home menu.
- When searching for location data, users now have the option to ‘Retry’ and ‘Cancel’ when a failure occurs.
- A progress bar is introduced for application installation.
- A direct link to PlayStation Store is made available for new applications that users may discover on near.
- Users can now update data at any time within near, provided they are within the same location.
- The display time of notification alerts has been reduced from 5 seconds to 3 seconds.
- Functional improvements have been made in the following games and applications: Unit 13, Gravity Daze, near.
