App of the Week: Radiant Defense

So I’m kind of a whore for tower defense games. From cartoony games like Plants Vs Zombies, to hardcore scifi throw downs like Sentinel 3, I can’t get enough.

So when I found out that one of my favorite app developers made a tower defense set in the world of one of my favorite Android shooters it was peanut butter jelly time!

Let’s take a look at Radiant Defense. +Continue Reading

Android App of the Week: The Avengers-Iron Man Mark VII

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!

I’m stupid stoked for the movie, and realized that I’ve been ravenously consuming all things Marvel over the last couple of weeks. Iron Man has always been my favorite Avenger, so this app was right up my alley.

It’s really just a short interactive comic, but is a fun way to recap the two Iron Man Films, with a short bonus story, before heading into the Joss Whedon spectacular.

Yeah, it’s for kids, but it has a few fun tricks up its sleeve. Interactive controls with tap and tilt reactions, plus you can read the comic while listening to music cues from the scores of the Iron Man films. For younger kids there’s also a read along mode which highlights the words in each panel.

It’s silly. I know. But it’s fun.

Make Mine MARVEL!

Android App of the Week: Can I Stream It?

I love it when a great little web service gets its own standalone app. Nothing wrong with going to a browser, but on our mobile devices, an app is usually faster.

The app also helpfully links you to other information like IMDB, and if you sign up for an account, you can save your searches for notification once movies become available to stream. Can I Stream It? is a great little web service which we use a lot while producing Movies You May Have Missed.

It’s a movie searching service which will quickly show you if you  can stream or digitally rent/buy a film, and keeps track of services like Youtube, Amazon, and Netflix.

If you’re really into film like we are, this is a great service which helps feed our instant gratification, movie watching needs.

Android App of The Week – Flixster

This app has been around for a little while, but recent refreshes and support for new services prompted me to give it a second look.

I’ve been using Flixster since it first started on Facebook as a way to rate movies you liked. As a social plugin to a social network, I didn’t think it was particularly useful. At its core, one might say that the exact same functionality could be found in services like Netflix or Amazon, and without the benefit of actually being able to rent or buy films.

So why revisit it now? +Continue Reading

Android App of the Week: Uber

Locomotion people!

Sure. There are plenty of ways to get from point A to point B. You could take a bus, or bum a ride from a friend, or get a cab.

But sometimes you want both convenience and style.

May I introduce you to Uber. +Continue Reading

Android App of The Week: They Need to Be Fed

I like puzzle games.

I like crazy twists on puzzle games.

I like games that look like they’re for kids, but have a morbid edge to them.

Feed me, Seymour!

Android App of the Week: TED Talks for Your Android Device

It’s an official app!

I’ll be hammering my data plan and killing my battery. I’m something of a TED junky, and now we’ve got a direct portal to all kinds of TED goodness while we’re on the go!

The app has over 1200 talks cataloged, so if you’re not familiar with the conference, you’ll have a LOT of watching to do to catch up.

The app is laid out in a simple, almost YouTube style. Firing it up for the first time took a little while, and the app isn’t very responsive when it comes to switching from portrait to landscape, but who cares. It’s TED. Go get it . Now!

Android App of the Week: Ummm… Take Your Pick…

So let me be honest.

I don’t have an app for you this week.

See, the Google App Market is now Google Play, and to celebrate they’re offering a bunch of apps for 50 cents.

So I bought a bunch of them… +Continue Reading

Android App of the Week: Graph 89

You ever look at your graphing calculator and think “it’s just too small…”

But no, seriously–have you ever thought about the graphing calculator racket? That the price of tech from the 90′s has pretty much remained unchanged for the better part of twenty years. I mean, here we are walking around with super computers in our pockets, and graphing calculators still have chunky low-res monochrome screens. It’s the gadget equivalent of a slide rule…

Since tablets and smartphones are basically general purpose computing devices, why shouldn’t we have a graphing calculator on board too? +Continue Reading

Android App of the Week – Sentinel 3: Homeworld

It’s GAME TIME!

Since getting into Android gaming, I’ve become kind of a sucker for good tower defense games. Sure Plants Vs Zombies was the gateway drug, but then I chilled with Fieldrunners, then Grave Defense, then RoboDefense.

By the time I got my first Android tablet, I was hankering for something a little less cartoony.

Origin8 Technologies was happy to oblige… +Continue Reading
